Planurile de Mobilitate Urbană Durabilă au câștigat recunoaștere și importanță la nivel European Planul de Acțiune privind Mobilitatea Urbană Consiliul European al Miniștrilor adoptă Planul de Acțiune pe 24 iunie 2010 Acțiunea 1: “Accelerarea implementării planurilor de mobilitate urbană sustenabilă” Pe termen scurt, Comisia va sprijini autoritățile locale pentru a dezvolta planuri de mobilitate urbană sustenabilă. Pe termen lung, Comisia ar putea să ia măsuri suplimentare, de exemplu prin intermediul stimulentelor sau al recomandărilor. Comisia va introduce dimensiunea mobilității urbane în Convenția primarilor pentru a promova o abordare integrată care să pună în relație energia și schimbările climatice, pe de o parte, și transporturile, pe de alta. (…) va încuraja orașele care participă la convenție să introducă aspectele legate de transport și mobilitate în planurile de acțiune pentru energia sustenabilă. În cazul țărilor din categoria 3, planificarea transporturilor tinde să se axeze pe mari lucrări de infrastructură și sunt doar puține strategii de transport reglementate. Mai mult, planurile de transport existente sunt incluse în planurile de dezvoltare urbană care identifică coridoare și arii pentru infrastructura majoră de transport.
